“I got to meet so many people and mentors. While being the only student chosen to represent Alabama A&M University, I made sure that when I left Boeing, everyone knew who I was and hopefully remembered my name.”
AAMU sophomore Mikaylah Pratt of Charlotte, N.C., spent June 13–16 in Philadelphia for a three-day, all-inclusive introduction to The Boeing Company.
The mechanical engineering major was one of the few students at Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) accepted into the Boeing HBCU Immersion Program. The highly competitive program is part of the Boeing | Thurgood Marshall College Fund HBCU Investment and is open to select freshmen and sophomores at 13 partnering TMCF HBCUs.
“I found out about the program from my freshman academic advisor, Dr. Selicia Kidd. I applied and a few weeks later learned I was a semi-finalist, and finally that I was accepted. Everything was paid for (except checked baggage) and the experience was amazing! We worked on elevator pitches, toured the Philadelphia Boeing facility, hung out with some of the Boeing faculty at Top Golf and went to a wonderful Italian restaurant. I now have LinkedIn connections with most of the Boeing faculty members!”
Pratt shared her experience on social media. “I am thanking everyone I had the pleasure to meet and connect with. Especially TMCF because they could have selected anyone else, but they selected me.”
Pratt says her goals after college are to be the first in her family to earn a doctorate in mechanical engineering. “I also want to become the first African American female automaker.”
